That is scary.</p><p>Sad things are happening, slowly. Making me question so many of my beliefs, my ways of thinking that used to keep me safe and are now no longer any use. Much of this I know academically but different when in the middle of it. My footing feels very unsure right now.</p><p>Through this and more, the morning walks help. However low I'm feeling just the sight of the Goldfinches flitting from wire to wire, leading me down the road and a quick hop, skip of a lamb makes me smile inside.</p><p>Change is a forgone conclusion but that doesn't make it any easier.</p><p>I had better things to write when I was walking, of course I distracted myself as soon as I got in. Ah well.<br /></p>siobhanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13730916795870822748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-985138050056722495.post-26202212925617402232023-05-19T10:10:00.003+00:002023-05-19T10:10:37.247+00:00<p>This morning looking out of the window, I realised that I wanted to try to write in a different way. I have a visual memory and find describing feelings and situations very difficult. I think in part because I can't decide what is relevant to say and what is unnecessary.</p><p>I do so love words and find their meanings and origens fascinating.</p><p>Back to my window.</p><p>It's warm, with just a hint of coolness left over from last night. The birds have had their fill at the feeder, mostly woodpeckers, greenfinches and sparrows today. Squabbles happen profusely.<br /></p><p>A white butterfly, possibly a cabbage white - although I am not up on my lepidopterans - flitting purposefully around the very tall bush on the other side of the fence. So many tiny flying creatures have taken to the skies bringing the swifts and swallows back to the area. They will be out in force later.</p><p>It was as if I was looking out onto the pages of a novel. That idyllic summer's day that has occurred in many of the books I've read.</p><p>The view has stories within it.</p><p>How the lawn got its patchwork effect, how the hole appeared between the trees giving the woodpeckers easy access to the nuts, why the clothes line is blue, and many more. </p><p>Stories and memories, I like that.</p><p>All that information from looking out one smallish window. To think of all the stories and memories being seen all over the world - it is incredible!<br /></p><p> <br /></p>siobhanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13730916795870822748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-985138050056722495.post-7293302463681370692022-10-13T13:00:00.006+00:002023-04-20T09:40:49.292+00:0011th and 12th Oct<p> YES!!</p><p>I got 2 days open access at Scottish Sculpture Workshop to finally make these sculptures into bronzes.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; It has been such a long drawn out process but I'm still grateful to VACMA for choosing my project and funding my learning. </p><p>Today it was more of the same - playing with wax - managed to get most of the pieces attached but had to get Eden to finish a couple for me as I was getting nowhere fast.</p><p>They are to stay at SSW and Eden will coat them in a ceramic shell which is a series of layers which have to dry between each dipping, quite a process.</p><p>The rest of my time was spent making a mould for the oak leaf ball.<br /><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGTEGCnw8up-aefQXb-UjFkhv99jhU58IO7rYZnDv8nYGDdVq5DxioOIPLUzkvmJDHB3QWdZmqPz29HowxUT98p1jzC6HV12uaniK3Ssy-qE6-DWjIh9JDMdHQw1V-sZe84Ld-LZozw_IQDgv8ZG35SMlgaLN9166AfjyKFvXJNrem9nIcRn36AmibyA/s1157/SKM-oakleaf%20ball.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1157" data-original-width="1143" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGTEGCnw8up-aefQXb-UjFkhv99jhU58IO7rYZnDv8nYGDdVq5DxioOIPLUzkvmJDHB3QWdZmqPz29HowxUT98p1jzC6HV12uaniK3Ssy-qE6-DWjIh9JDMdHQw1V-sZe84Ld-LZozw_IQDgv8ZG35SMlgaLN9166AfjyKFvXJNrem9nIcRn36AmibyA/w198-h200/SKM-oakleaf%20ball.jpg" width="198" /></a></div><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxtUO2LV72SeDQuE_hmcamJewV9gvNBFXu0YM2PHwygjJrQwm8Ej2GZqFczsVGdsB4WYro7ebi7aCP-ObjxvJTTFDsQ1yY928NHRjHHG-knhbOy9cl-bhfyHxktqCa2fBMeoOQfr6YnfW_KAL-M-803gm6eGzv5v7LHdiwnvvCgPdWHeE9AfjfB9O-uQ/s1600/IMG-20220616-WA0003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxtUO2LV72SeDQuE_hmcamJewV9gvNBFXu0YM2PHwygjJrQwm8Ej2GZqFczsVGdsB4WYro7ebi7aCP-ObjxvJTTFDsQ1yY928NHRjHHG-knhbOy9cl-bhfyHxktqCa2fBMeoOQfr6YnfW_KAL-M-803gm6eGzv5v7LHdiwnvvCgPdWHeE9AfjfB9O-uQ/w150-h200/IMG-20220616-WA0003.jpg" width="150" /></a></div><br /><p><br />oak leaf ball with silicone layer, I ahd to add another chemical so that the mixture could be brushed on.</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj40la-0DV-gW96B6Qwgz4zi4NZJ1vXZ4WMfJlUvmjshtxfwh0x2S1aM903pkMVfXTJONo4aIbFOMVSQuoxk-CUT7RXet87adeyHJ_SaV3DLe0Q2MIp26MSS0YAJ9Jz1KXXNowCiUjziI57sA_5__ENRfp_g2M6OB6YcrguE2xuxlQCkRN8Z4jic-9ypQ/s1600/IMG-20220617-WA0000.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj40la-0DV-gW96B6Qwgz4zi4NZJ1vXZ4WMfJlUvmjshtxfwh0x2S1aM903pkMVfXTJONo4aIbFOMVSQuoxk-CUT7RXet87adeyHJ_SaV3DLe0Q2MIp26MSS0YAJ9Jz1KXXNowCiUjziI57sA_5__ENRfp_g2M6OB6YcrguE2xuxlQCkRN8Z4jic-9ypQ/w150-h200/IMG-20220617-WA0000.jpg" width="150" /></a></div>and the next part of the process - building up a clay wall so the plaster can be added.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh51C_BPi1wmlTP0KbbvI6dUi_uVws1nMwn6DfYbcLZ2nNaXxJv8kBY98SHRQUp8paE8HcK_h8mhVIkKGvPcWQsHUsVAQyK4K1-y247WMHfY0pVmwnTdsH-gUkMQqFtCENN5mtNPRaC_nsGV8C2rNmHu3Syp9nTKCq9KK9EVWcluTZyO-GMuLYi3C-e0Q/s1600/IMG-20220617-WA0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh51C_BPi1wmlTP0KbbvI6dUi_uVws1nMwn6DfYbcLZ2nNaXxJv8kBY98SHRQUp8paE8HcK_h8mhVIkKGvPcWQsHUsVAQyK4K1-y247WMHfY0pVmwnTdsH-gUkMQqFtCENN5mtNPRaC_nsGV8C2rNmHu3Syp9nTKCq9KK9EVWcluTZyO-GMuLYi3C-e0Q/w150-h200/IMG-20220617-WA0001.jpg" width="150" /></a></div><br /><p style="text-align: left;">Here it is! the first half siliconed and plaster base added. Sounds easy but far from straight forward.</p><p>Hot plate on and tools heating up... The trick is to hold the wax cylinder and the piece close together, insert the heated flat tool between them, slightly squeeze together and slide out the tool.</p><p>Oh yes, without burning yourself on the tool, dropping the waxes or dropping burning wax on yourself. I also emailed Eden the technician there and arranged a visit to ask for their advice on my next steps/time frame for mould making/if project feasible.</p><p>...Today was the visit day.</p><p>I was nervous as I always am meeting new people and new places. Luckily it was under an hour drive so easy to get to.</p><p>I pulled in beside the foundry and then Eden and Michael came out to say hi. I found it fascinating, lots of interesting and odd pieces of metal hanging around and made into useful objects. Just my type of place. Great reuse.</p><p>Discussion was positive, I showed the pieces I wanted to make moulds from and cast, and they both agreed it could be done in that time with me doing some work at home too. <br /></p><p>This is the Beech leaf. <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBs0eggFtsOaC_g5A7l0qx2eoETa7hEW7yKz1ZKkH64uvJZWy3rCAOK9YLnnSIAw-ug-l8cwtQfhiADc15oAC3oHfhPiykzoQbp5zBeLClD9MWnTn9e8J2ERbkPGZ1RR_ih-piFxdBxiIcbqfw11x0b8mRN0U5AZkME25xZZhqz98cQNaQLLqpkNA0sg/s2000/siobhan%20morison-Beech%20Leaf%20(back).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1648" data-original-width="2000" height="196" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBs0eggFtsOaC_g5A7l0qx2eoETa7hEW7yKz1ZKkH64uvJZWy3rCAOK9YLnnSIAw-ug-l8cwtQfhiADc15oAC3oHfhPiykzoQbp5zBeLClD9MWnTn9e8J2ERbkPGZ1RR_ih-piFxdBxiIcbqfw11x0b8mRN0U5AZkME25xZZhqz98cQNaQLLqpkNA0sg/w237-h196/siobhan%20morison-Beech%20Leaf%20(back).jpg" width="237" /> <br /></a><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> I had ideas for another of my plaster pieces, the Oakleaf column and the verdict was that would be fine too. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2diWQYyEy5hHD_-QZQvcj963V4xJ0K8zpOL9E-5kH91kxxcYFpG29iNhxtVBw7De_ftFZ3jAno2SYV2u2AUDAEEdl0J1FjRmoCz7UwkP0aUUc5VjGUfMWnASll0giMe2_R6Y3CowIEgBugOUdrwYedLXg87Nth2M0e-k43Jie3SDj8gjFMgwKMGvvsw/s8373/siobhan%20morison-Oakleaf%20Column.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="8373" data-original-width="5906" height="254" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2diWQYyEy5hHD_-QZQvcj963V4xJ0K8zpOL9E-5kH91kxxcYFpG29iNhxtVBw7De_ftFZ3jAno2SYV2u2AUDAEEdl0J1FjRmoCz7UwkP0aUUc5VjGUfMWnASll0giMe2_R6Y3CowIEgBugOUdrwYedLXg87Nth2M0e-k43Jie3SDj8gjFMgwKMGvvsw/w180-h254/siobhan%20morison-Oakleaf%20Column.jpg" width="180" /></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Progress! At the time I was halfway through having covid - not the best of times - and this put a halt on all proceedings. </p><p>I was really excited but had no energy. I couldn't do much of anything really which was very frustrating. </p><p>Today we felt ok enough to begin re-roofing the wee shed I use for sculpture. Old roof off and the wood - well, it wasn't even wood - was bowed and had been leaking for ages as well as the shed slowly listing to the right.</p><p>New thicker ply (recycled from an event) went up and and a new centre beam, then I lost my energy and had to have a rest. My partner carried on and put the underfelt on it. </p><p>That is where I am now. A new roof on the shed, strengthened to prevent the listing and all tidied, am so pleased. It gives me a sense of joy just to open the door. Now just to get more energy after this illness and I'll get on with the sculptures I want to make.</p><p><br /></p>siobhanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13730916795870822748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-985138050056722495.post-34763451057463089182022-03-11T15:00:00.057+00:002022-03-27T16:45:16.346+00:00I've got an award!!!<p> Today, the email came through from Aberden City Council about my VACMA Application. I thought we were just drawing out the pattern, but to my surprise, I'd already cut out the toile, sewed the two front panels to the back and sewn one sleeve. As the title suggests, I have been learning pattern cutting, my tutor is the wonderful Tracey Stewart (aka MIN atelier)<br />
More and more I've been getting fed up trying to find clothes that I like and that fit me. If something is in a nice fabric, the pattern is horrible or the garment has some silly frilly bit or cut too low or just plain doesn't fit.<br />
<br />
This is a very precise science and I love it. Proper measuring and marking out. Really appeals to the engineering side of me.<br />
<br />
Too involved to take photos but will try in the future.<br />

Finally got away!<br />
I've been looking forward to this trip for about 2 months now. A friend I haven't seen in too long.<br />
<br />
Love train journeys too, so wee picnic in tow and off I go.<br />
It was a very restful journey, well, once I'd found a seat - had booked one - unfortunately I got on the wrong train in Edinburgh. There wa sone leaving at 11, 11.20 and 11.30, all going to London. I hadn't expected so many, was in a rush and just saw London 11. something so went for it. Anyway, not a problem with ticket and I eventually ended up with a great seat in a lovely peaceful carriage.<br />

I am so excited!<br />
I've finally booked myself onto a Gargoyle carving course.<br />
Ages to wait as it's not til Oct but so excited!!<br />
I'll be off to Lincoln to carve stone and of course check out the cathedral amongst other sights. <br />
<br />
Looking up is something that many people just don't do especially in a town or city but up there are fabulous things.... gargoyles of course, but I've also seen the beautiful architecture, strange items in windows such as large models of Noddy and Big Ears, and once I saw the most beautifully stone carved ship in full rig - such a sight.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: blue;">"The origins of the word 'gargoyle' are derived from the old French word 'gargouille'
meaning throat. In Architectural terms only the creature serving as actual
water spout is called a Gargoyle, otherwise is it known as a Grotesque. A
grotesque may function solely as decoration."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: blue;">What is the purpose of Gargoyles? The first is
a practical purpose - gargoyles provided a method of drainage which
protected the stones and the mortar of churches, cathedrals and castles from
erosion.
The number of Gargoyles added to buildings were numerous because dividing
the flow of water minimized potential water damage. The second purpose
of gargoyles was as 'guardians' of the buildings in the form of abstract
symbols designed to represent, and to ward off evil. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: blue;">http://www.medieval-life-and-times.info/medieval-art/gargoyles.htm </span><br />
<span style="color: blue;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: blue;"><span style="color: black;">This information means that technically I'll probably be making a grotesque, but I really don't mind. I would love to make a proper gargoyle that is for water, maybe in a bit.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: blue;"><span style="color: black;">Another interesting fact is that there are no two alike!</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: blue;"><span style="color: black;">These are a few of some I like.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: red;">Happy Solstice!! </span>💗</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is the main reason for the post because it's good to celebrate the changing seasons. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Good to celebrate change because there is no thing more inevitable than change.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For a change today, I went through to Cupar to check out some of the artwork on the Arts Trail and saw Celie Byrne's fantastic portraits, alongside them, the collages of Phill Jupitus which definitely bring a smile. As well, a SKELF Sonic Chamber installation and Artobotic.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There was also a very amusing, well illustrated, modern tapestry about a certain public figure. Extremely tongue in cheek and a bit of a protest about the politics of today. I was lucky enough to win an original artwork from the artist Wulfgar The Bard from a machine. For £10 you win an original artwork from one of 3 artists. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Lovely chat with some folks and a cup of tea, all in all a great interlude to my usual life.</div>

<br />
<br />
This is the very first (at the moment) of a series of 10 images inspired by the archipelagos in the Baltic Sea, between Stockholm, Mariehamn, Turku and Helsinki.<br />
<br />
The trip was for my sister's birthday and that happened to be in March. Maybe not the best time to go (locals were a little surprised to see us at that time of the year) but with Brexshit in process we decided to go then.<br />
<br />
Therefore the weather wasn't always the best. During the ferry journeys it was often very windy, wet and mostly snowing. Quite glorious in it's own way. Whe we did see the islands in passing they were sometimes almost completely obscured by snow but the ice near their shores was thick and undulating slowly as the boat passed by.<br />

As the title suggests, I have been absent for a long time. Busy times and then emotional family times made blogging a very difficult thing to do.<br />
In fact it made everything difficult to do. I feel that I'm appearing out the other side but consequentially I have a lot of catching up to do.<br />
<br />
I reasoned that playing catch up would not be beneficial to me so thought I'd just jump in again now.<br />
<br />
I will be slowly publishing previous posts that describe and illuminate some of my adventures during my online silence but this is a beginning which will make it easier to carry on.<br />
Much more to follow.<br />
<br />
See you all very soon.</div>
